PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aliphatic or alicyclic polyester which controls generation of a cyclic oligomer as a by-product in molding, consequently reduces surface appearance when made into a molding and eliminates stain of a molding apparatus such as a mold in molding and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The aliphatic or aliphatic polyester mainly comprises a constituent repeating unit derived from an aromatic or alicyclic diol component and an aromatic or alicyclic dicarboxylic acid component, has≤4,000 ppm cyclic oligomer content (CD<SB>A</SB>; ppm) and≤1,000 ppm difference (CD<SB>B</SB>-CD<SB>A</SB>) between a cyclic oligomer content (CD<SB>B</SB>; ppm) after heating two hours at 230°C and the cyclic oligomer content (CD<SB>A</SB>; ppm) before heating. The method for producing the aromatic or alicyclic polyester comprises subjecting the aromatic or alicyclic polyester which mainly comprises the constituent repeating unit derived from the aromatic or alicyclic polyester diol component and the aromatic or alicyclic dicarboxylic acid component and is produced by condensation polymerization in the presence of a condensation polymerization catalyst to aftertreatment by contact with a water-soluble organic solvent selected from the group consisting of a ketone, an ether and an ester and water.
