A tilt mechanism (1) for tilting objects ( such as outboard motors) connecte d thereto including at least one side mounting bracket (2) supporting a backin g plate (3). The backing plate (3) has a lower operational position (4) and a raised storage position (5). An adjustable connection arrangement (11, 12, 6 a, 20) is provided connecting the backing plate (3) to the at least one side mounting bracket (2). The adjustable connection arrangement includes first (6a) and a second (6b) adjustable connection points which are restrained to each travel in arcuate paths (7, 8) during movements of the backing plate (3 ) between the operational and storage positions. When in the operational position, the force due to gravity on the backing plate produces biasing forces about the respective adjustable connection points in opposite directions (9, 10) along the arcuate paths thereby providing an automatic raising function.
