1,041,659. Capstans. E. BAAS. Nov. 26, 1964 [Nov. 30, 1963], No. 48094/64. Heading B8B. A vertical capstan incorporates a ratchet arrangement for manual operation comprising a ratchet-wheel bolted to the upper face of the capstan drum 21, a pair of sprung pawls pivotally mounted on the underside of a mounting plate 22 coaxially mounted above the drum and having radial sockets 32 therein to receive handles for the manual operation. The capstan shaft 13 hydraulically driven via a worm and wheel 12 in a gear-box 1 below a ship s deck, is splined to an engaging disc 19, rotatably mounts a chain wheel 20 and the drum 21, bolted together and also rotatably mounts the mounting plate 22 and is capped by a nut 23 threadedly received at 34. In normal operation, the nut 23 is screwed down and via a bearing 37 protected by a labyrinth seal 38, the engaging disc 19 is frictionally coupled to the chain wheel 20 via a friction lining 40. The lower bell-shaped end 41 of the chain wheel 20 protects the lining 40 and acts as a ratchet-wheel 42 for a sprung pawl pivoted at 44 to a base-plate 18. This pawl is screwed in the unlocked position when the capstan pays out. For manual operation the nut 23 is unscrewed against a stop 35 and the shaft 13 and the drum and chain wheel can be turned manually by the inserted handles. Handles are inserted in the radial bores 39 to turn the nut 23. |
