PURPOSE: An image reading apparatus and a driving method thereof are provided to perform a reading operation of an image pattern by detecting correctly a contact state of a target, and prevent damage and malfunctions by discharging stably the static electricity of the target. CONSTITUTION: The first tactile electrode(10) and the second tactile electrode(20) are mutually separated each other. An opposing electrode(30) and a pulse generating circuit(40) make the first tactile electrode excite a signal voltage for a predetermined signal waveform. A limiting circuit(50) restricts the voltage swing of the signal waveform excited to the first tactile electrode. A detection circuit(60) determines the contact condition of the detected substance to the first tactile electrode and the second tactile electrode by detecting the change of a signal component represented to the second tactile electrode.
