Strip or tape-form laminates having curled longitudinal edges are made by bonding to a tape of synthetic resin a film or coated layer, which may be much thinner, of a synthetic resin of different chemical or physical properties (which latter includes a different degree of orientation or stretching), and stretching the laminate, with or without heating. Synthetic resins usable are nylon 6, nylon 6, 6, nylon 6, 11 polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate and tereisophthalate, polyolefins such as polythene, ethylene/propylene copolymers, polypropylene and crystalline and isotactic polypropylene, polystyrene, P.V.C., polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylidene chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyethers, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, polymethacrylates, and mixtures, copolymers, and acetylated and chlorinated derivatives thereof. The product exemplified is a laminate of polypropylene film bonded, by chlorinated polypropylene, to a polypropylene film which has been biaxially stretched to six times; this laminate curls towards the biaxially stretched layer on being slit into tapes and stretched 70% at 30‹ C. A number of such laminates may be united, by longitudinal line-bonding, in various arrangements, or may be line-bonded to a base film, the bonded materials so formed, on being stretched, producing strip-form products having components which are longitudinally curled, or of oval or dumb-bell section, due to curling of the component laminates. The drawings (not shown) illustrate typical products in section. The line bonding of the component laminates may be effected by adhesive, heat, or ultrasonics or they may be stitched together. Some of the strips may be slit longitudinally (e.g. Figs. 6c, 9c, not shown). The strips may be used decoratively, may be twisted into cords or strings, or cords or wires may be laid on the laminates before stretching, being thereby enveloped, or permanently sheathed, in the convolutions formed. Uses of the products of the invention mentioned are tyre cords, wrappers, and materials for rugs, wall coverings, and clothes. |
