Vinyl chloride polymers are stabilized with compositions comprising by weight 0.25 to 10 parts of an organotin compound having one to three organic radicals linked to tin through carbon, 0.01 to 2 parts of an a -mercapto acid moiety having at least one mercapto group or residue and at least one carboxyl group or residue and 0.01 to 2 parts of an aromatic amine or phenolic antioxidant. Specified polymers are polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, maleic and fumaric esters and styrene, and mixtures of polyvinyl chloride with minor proportions of chlorinated polyethylene or acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene copolymer. The organotin, a -mercapto acid and antioxidant functions may be present in the same or different compounds, and many suitable tin compounds, mercapto acids and derivatives thereof, and antioxidants are listed. The compositions may also comprise plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, tricresyl phosphate, and epoxidized oils and esters; light and ultraviolet stabilizers, e.g. 2-hydroxybenzophenones, trithiane derivatives, o-hydroxyphenyl benzotriazoles, a ,b -benzoisothiazolone dioxides, alkyl styryl ketones, 2-hydroxyaryltriazines and dialkylhydroxybenzoic acid derivatives; and parting agents; many suitable compounds being listed. Examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride and (1) stearic acid, dibutyl tin oxide, thiomalic acid and 2,6-di-t.-butyl-4-methyl phenol; (2) stearic acid, dibutyl tin oxide, thiomalic acid and 2,6-di-t.-butyl-4-methyl phenol; (4) dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl tin oxide, thiomalic acid and 4,41-butylidene - bis(2 - t. - butyl - 5 - methyl phenol); (5) stearic acid, 2,6-di-t.-butyl-4-methyl phenol and dibutyl tin oxide and thiomalic acid, dibutyl tin distearate and thiomalic acid, or dibutyl tin bis(thiomalate); (6) montan wax, dibutyl tin oxide, thiomalic acid and 2,6- di - t. - butyl - 4 - methyl phenol; (7) chlorinated polyethylene, isooctyl epoxystearate, 2-t.-butyl-4-methoxyphenol and dibutyl tin bis-(thiomalate) or dibutyl tin oxide and thiomalic acid; (8) stearic acid, dibutyl tin bis(isoctyl thioglycolate) and 2,6-di-t.-butyl cresol together with (9) dibutyl tin bis(isooctyl maleate) and (10) 2(21-hydroxy-51-methylphenyl)benzotriazole; isooctyl epoxy stearate, dibutyl tin bis(isooctyl glycolate), 2,6-di-t.-butyl cresol and calcium 2-ethylhexoate together with (11 and 12) 2(21-hydroxy-51-methylphenyl) benzotriazole or (13 and 14) 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy benzophenone; (15) dibutyl tin bis(isooctyl glycolate) and bis(isooctyl maleate), 2(21-hydroxy - 5 - methylphenyl)benzotriazole and 2,6 - di - t. - butyl - p - cresol; (17 and 18) dibutyl tin oxide, thiomalic acid, 2,6-di-t.butyl-p-cresol and 2(21 - hydroxy - 5 - methylphenyl)-benzotriazole together with (16) dibutyl tin maleate, isooctyl epoxystearate and montan wax, and (19) isooctyl epoxystearate; (20 to 22) isooctyl epoxystearate, montan wax, dibutyl tin bis(isooctyl thioglycolate) and bis-(isooctyl maleate), 2,6-di-t.-butyl-p-cresol and 2(21 - hydroxy - 51 - methylphenyl) benzotriazole together with (24) a vinyl chloride/ vinyl hexadecyl ether copolymer, and (25) chlorinated polyethylene; and isooctyl epoxystearate, montan wax, di-n-octyl tin bis(isooctylthioglycolate), di-n-octyl tin bis(isooctyl maleate), di-n-dodecyl thiodipropionate; and composition comprising (3) a vinyl chloride/ vinyl acetate copolymer, dibutyl tin bis(thiomalate) and 2,6-di-t.-butyl-4-methyphenol; and (23) a vinyl chloride/vinyl hexadecylether copolymer, isooctyl epoxystearate, montan wax, dibutyl tin bis(isooctyl thioglycolate), dibutyl tin bis(isooctyl maleate), 2,6-di-t.-butyl-p-cresol and 2(21-hydroxy-51-methylphenyl)-benzotriazole. |
