<p>It is intended to provide a coagulant showing a highly efficient coagulation activity even in a small dose by physically modifying the structure of gamma polyglutamic acid. Namely, a coagulant characterized by containing as the main component radioactively crosslinked gamma-polyglutamic acid or a gamma-polyglutamic acid salt, in particular, radioactively crosslinked safe gamma-polyglutamic acid produced by a gamma-polyglutamic acid-producing bacterium. Also, it can be obtained by irradiating a culture which is obtained by culturing a gamma-polyglutamic acid-producing bacterium. Radioactively crosslinked gamma-polyglutamic acid or a gamma-polyglutamic acid salt having a molecular weight of 10,000,000 or more has a particularly high coagulation activity. Since gamma-polyglutamic acid per se is a food, the safety of the coagulant is guaranteed. Therefore, it is safely usable as a coagulant not only in treating sewage and waste water but also in the fields of food processing, fermentation technology, water supply treatment and so on.</p> |
