The lower edges of the sleeves used to form the cells for holding the fuel rods have a wave shape, with peaks aligned with tabs on the sleeve and troughs between adjacent tabs. A fuel rod spacer for holding a number of fuel rods in an nuclear installation comprises a number of cells to receive one fuel rod, so that the latter extends in the cell length direction. Each cell is formed by a sleeve with an upper edge and a lower edge. The sleeve has tabs protruding inwards over the cell length direction and extending parallel to the latter so that they are in contact with the fuel rod. The upper and lower edges of the sleeve have a wave shape with peaks aligned with the tabs and troughs between adjacent tabs.
