PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system in which light use efficiency is further improved with a polarization conversion means and to provide a projector. SOLUTION: In the lighting system, a luminous flux from a light source 10' is split into partial luminous fluxes by a luminous flux splitting means 600, the luminous fluxes are made substantially the same as each other in polarization direction by the polarization converting means 40 and transmitted onto a specific area 1000 to be lighted by a superposition optical system 620. The polarization conversion means 40 has: polarization splitting films 42 arranged in predetermined directions and split the partial luminous fluxes into transmission light beams and reflection light beams according to polarization directions; and reflection films 44 arranged corresponding to the polarization splitting films 42 and reflect the reflection light beams from the corresponding films 4 into directions that are substantially the same as the directions of the transmission light beams. The luminous flux splitting means 600 is an lens array, in which the condensation properties of the lenses are set so that light source images are formed on the polarization splitting films 42 at intervals.
