Apparatus and method for measurement of any unbalance of a motor cycle wheel, having a main shaft (2), which is mounted such that it can rotate, of a wheel balancing machine which can be driven by an electrical drive (20), a clamping shaft (36) which can be fixed to the balancing machine coaxially with respect to the main shaft (2) and on which the motor cycle wheel (4) is mounted in its bearings (21) such that it can rotate, a driver device (22) which is connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the main shaft (2) in order to transmit a torque, which is produced by the electrical drive (20), from the main shaft (2) to the motor cycle wheel (4) which is mounted on the clamping shaft (36) such that it can rotate, and a measurement device (23) which, in one measurement run, measures forces which result from any unbalance of the motor cycle wheel at the measurement rotation speed, where the rotationally fixed connection between the driver device (22) and the motor cycle wheel (4) can be detached by means of an inertia force, which acts on the driver device (22) and is formed by a torque impulse that is transmitted via the main shaft (2).
