In a fuel cell with a porous nickel cathode the alkali metal hydroxide electrolyte contains a cobalt salt. In operation a layer of Co 2 O 3 is formed on the surface of the cathode and prevents dissolution of Ni. The example describes an H 2 /O 2 fuel cell with a non-porous Pd/Ag anode and a biporous Ni cathode having a molten 80 wt. per cent KOH electrolyte containing 2 wt. per cent cobalt nitrate. Other cobalt salts, e.g. CoSO 4 and CoCl 2 may be used as may other alkali metal hydroxides. The oxidant may also be air and the fuel may be NH 3 or N 2 H 4 . |
