The method has a cooling medium volume circulated in a primary cooling circuit (PK) between a cooling unit (K) and a heat exchanger (WT,T1,M,T2) and a second cooling medium volume circulated in a secondary cooling circuit (SK) between the heat source (WQ) and the heat exchanger, with regulation of the heat transfer between the primary and secondary cooling circuits for maintaining a required temperature in the secondary cooling circuit. The heat exchange has a first stage, for heat transfer from the primary cooling circuit to an intermediate cooling circit (ZK) containing a third cooling medium volume and a second stage in which the third and second cooling medium volumes are mixed in a mixture ratio dependent on the required temperature for the secondary cooling circuit. An Independent claim for a device for maintaining a heat source at a constant temperature is also included.
