PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a memory for line data storage for the other purpose when it is not necessary to hold and refer to data of a preceding line in the case of compressing/extending a gradation object. SOLUTION: When compressing the gradation object, a direction of applying a gradation is judged and when high compressibility is achieved even without referring to pixels of the preceding line, the data of the preceding line are not held.
