FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method for preparing 5-methoxy-2-mercaptobenzimidazole of the formula (I) that is an intermediate compound used in synthesis of medicinal agent omeprazole. Method involves interaction of 3,4-diaminoanisole dihydrochloride and alkylxanthonate of alkaline metal in an aqueous-alcoholic alkaline medium at heating firstly up to 60-75 C and the following boiling and isolation of the end compound using acetic acid. Invention provides the development of technological method for preparing 5-methoxy-2- - mercaptobenzimidazole that provides high yield and high quality of the end product.
