The present invention relates to computer networks. It particularly relates to a method and system for remotely accessing data of a non-file system-based datastorage system (34) like e.g., a conventional database system, an Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) Container, or a Content Management System (CMS) or the like via a file system-oriented network protocol (16,18,20). It is proposed not to adapt the data to the network protocol in use, but instead, to adapt the commands which specify the access to said requested data transparent to the requesting client such that said client request is converted into an access request adapted to the access requirements of said non-file system-based data storage system (34). Further, after data read-out a request response comprising the requested data is generated according to the requirements imposed by said file system-oriented network protocol.
