PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the temperature of an engine coolant from increasing to an abnormally high value, while executing a shift-down operation when a driver travels at a low speed on a road of a long ascending slope by relying on control of a transmission control device. SOLUTION: Under a condition that an engine revolution speed is at a value allowing shift down, and accelerator opening at a predetermined value or more is continued over a predetermined period, and under other conditions, the shift down is automatically executed by interrupt control even if a driving operation is not executed.
