PURPOSE: A key input apparatus and a method for inputting characters in a mobile terminal using the same are provided so that a user can conveniently input information using various keypad cards having a variety of character array structures according to his preference. CONSTITUTION: A key input apparatus is comprised of a keypad card(100) and a card insertion part(200). The keypad card(100), marked with certain character and numeric information and having an integral card structure, transfers force, applied to push down each key button, to a lower printed-circuit board. The card insertion part(200) comprises a front case(201) having transparent key buttons(202) to project the character string of the keypad card(100) to the external. The card insertion part(200) provides the character information of the keypad card(100) to a user and receives key data from the user.
