1,268,713. Rechargeable electrodes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 23 June, 1969 [3 July, 1968], No. 31663/69. Heading HlB. Rechargeable electrodes are prepared by associating a current collector with a finely divided active material, intimately associating the active material with a dispersion in a liquid carrier of a fibrous linear hydrophobic fluorocarbon polymer and irreversibly breaking the suspension at atemperaturebelowthesintering temperature of the polymer to form a cohesive body comprising the active material and a fibrous interconnecting matrix of the polymer. The active material and the polymer can be associated to form a cohesive paste which is applied to the current collector or the active material on the current collector can be impregnated with the dispersion. The dispersion is broken by heating below the sintering temperature to volatilize the carrier (usually water) or by freezing followed by thawing or by increasing the pH or by solvent extraction of the carrier. Any surfactant in the dispersion is removed in the heating step or by washing. The active material may be Zn ZnO, Cd, CdO, Ni, NiO, Cu, CuO, Ag, Ag20 or HgO. When Zn is used in the formation of pasted electrodes either the surfactant is left in the paste until after the pasting operation or more preferably the paste is lubricated by amalgamation of the Zn and/or by the replacement of some Zn by ZnO. |
