PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of determining a kind of a discharge lamp having a substantially equal rated discharge lamp voltage and a different rated discharge lamp electric power and capable of carrying out substantially rated lighting of the determined discharge lamp by a single discharge lamp lighting device. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device is provided with an electric current detecting circuit 3 for detecting a discharge lamp electric current; a voltage detecting circuit 4 for detecting a restriking voltage Vlap generated at polarity inversion of the discharge lamp voltage; a discharge lamp kind determination circuit DJ for comparing the restriking voltage Vlap and a predetermined voltage and determining a kind of the discharge lamp LA; a target electric power setting circuit WX for setting the discharge lamp electric power so that the determined discharge lamp LA can carry out substantially rated lighting; an electric current calculation circuit IO for calculating a target reference electric current by dividing the electric power of the target electric power setting circuit WX and the discharge lamp voltage of the voltage detecting circuit 4; and a control circuit 5 for comparing the electric current calculated by the electric current calculation circuit IO and the discharge lamp electric current detected by the electric current detecting circuit 3, controlling a voltage converting circuit 1 and carrying out substantially rated lighting of the discharge lamp LA.
