Piston (1) for an internal combustion engine comprises at least one cylinder having an axis (14) running approximately horizontally in the assembly position (e.g. Boxer engine). A trough-shaped recess (12) holding lubricating/cooling oil is provided on the inside of the piston shaft in a geodetically lower-lying region. Preferred Features: The recess extends over up to 60degrees of the periphery. The recess progressively changes into the inner wall (11) of the piston shaft.
