摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module which facilitates optical axis adjustment and has both high performance and a low cost and a manufacturing method thereof. <P>SOLUTION: An optical axis adjustment step 2s of height (d) in Z-axial direction is formed on the top surface of a 2nd substrate 2 of the optical module to form an upper-stage surface and a lower-stage surface which are parallel to each other. A 1st substrate 1 has its reverse surface joined with the upper- stage surface of the 2nd substrate 2 with joining materials. An optical waveguide core 1c is formed in the 1st substrate 1. The optical waveguide core 1c is formed in the 1st substrate 1 in contact with its joined surface for the upper- stage surface of the 2nd substrate 2. An optical semiconductor element 3 is mounted on the lower-stage surface of the 2nd substrate 2, so that the optical axis of a light reception and emission part of this optical semiconductor element 3 is aligned with the optical axis of the optical waveguide core 1c formed in the 1st substrate 1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
