PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent buckling from generating in a workpiece by broadening the initial grip space for the purpose of obtaining a wide thickened part in one forming process, in a shaft thickening method of forming a thickened part at a desired position by applying rotation, bending and compression pressure on the workpiece. SOLUTION: The workpiece is held on a pair of rotary holders separated with a specific distance, bringing one rotary holder close to the other to impart a compression pressure to the workpiece, rotatably driving one rotary holder to give around-the- shaft rotation to the workpiece, and making one rotary holder biased in the direction inclined to the axial center of the other rotary holder to apply bending to the workpiece. A projection produced inside the bend of the workpiece is accumulated on the entire circumference of the workpiece and then, with unbending performed on the workpiece to straighten it, so that a desired thickened part is obtained. In such shaft thickening method, with the bending actuated on the workpiece, a guide member is abutted on the outer circumferential face on the outside of the workpiece bend with a proper pressurizing force, preventing the workpiece from being buckled and obtaining the desired thickened part.
