PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element long in luminance half-life, small in build-up of drive voltage with time, little in insulation breakdown, long in life and capable of emitting light by a simple drive circuit. SOLUTION: For an organic EL element 100 obtained by successively laminating a substrate-side electrode 4, an organic EL layer 6 and a counter electrode 8 on one side of an element substrate 2, an increase rate of an area measured through an atomic force microscope to a projected area in a direction perpendicular to an electrode surface of the substrate-side electrode is controlled to lower than 1.1%.
