<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a malfunction caused by a lateral electric field in an electro-optical substance such as liquid crystal, moreover, to reduce a malfunction caused by a step of the electro-optical substance. <P>SOLUTION: An electro-optical device is provided with pixel electrodes (9a) on a TFT array substrate (10), and counter electrodes (21) on a counter substrate (20). At a substrate for the pixel electrodes on the TFT array board, a gently stepped projection part (402) is arranged in an area facing a gap between pixel electrodes adjacent to each other.
