The method uses at least one measuring electrode (4.2) cooperating with the electrically conductive medium (L) within the container (1), for providing a full or empty indication in dependent on a measured conductance (G) or resistance between the measuring electrode and the container wall. The actual conductance or resistance characteristic is compared with normal filling or emptying characteristics (M1), for selecting the characteristic with the closest match, with termination of the filling or emptying when the measured signal reaches a constant end value. An Independent claim for a method for detecting a level threshold value in a container with an electrically conductive medium is also included.
