Identifying effectors of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, useful e.g. for treatment or prevention of cancer, by testing effect on GST-expressing fungi

Identifying effectors (I) of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) comprises: (a) treating a fungal culture having GST activity with test compound; (b) measuring microsomal and/or cytosolic, or total, GST activity; (c) comparing results with those from an untreated culture; and (d) selecting compounds that alter activity. Optionally the process is repeated with modified forms of the selected compounds. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) purified and isolated (I) identified by the new method; and (2) degrading xenobiotics using a fungal culture that has been treated with a (I) that induces GST.
