An aqueous dispersion of a finely divided thermoplastic polymerizate is obtainable by radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer M in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator and at least one acyl- or sulfonylthiourea compound. Independent claims are included for: (1) preparation of the dispersion as above in the presence of at least one sulfonylthiourea (STU) compound of formula (I) below; (2) a coating agent in the form of an aqueous composition containing 10-60 wt.% of at least one finely divided polymerizate as defined above; (3) a coating agent in the form of a waterborne silk gloss or high gloss emulsion paint.
