The furnace to remelt a metal block has a self-consuming smelting electrode (9) in a slag bath (10). The zone (17, 22) over the liquid slag bath is insulated from the ambient atmosphere by a hood (5) over the smelting crucible (2). The gap (18) between the solid block (16) for smelting and the inner wall of the crucible is filled with a gas, to prevent a dispersion of molten metal into the gap and give a good heat take-off. The gas of argon or nitrogen is fed from a compressed gas bottle (20) through a valve (23) to control the gas pressure in the gap.
