A method for controlling an image server having at least one camera operationally connected to it. The image server transmits to user terminals image files produced according to predefined parameters with the camera. The image server comprises a buffer memory for storing image files that are arranged to have a time stamp defining the time of production of the image attached to them. A user terminal transmits to the image server an image request that comprises the predefined parameters and a parameter defining the allowed maximum age of an image file. The predefined parameters of the image request are compared with the corresponding parameters of the image files in the buffer memory and the parameter defining the maximum age is compared with the time stamp of the image file. If these match, the image file in the buffer memory is transmitted to the user terminal that made the request.
