During an interruption of the pressure swing adsorption process, the processing of the gas mixture to be decomposed, the production of the product stream and/or the production of the residual gas stream are not guaranteed and the scheme is re-adjusted so that a residual gas stream is continuously removed over a time period of a few seconds to several minutes. Operating a pressure swing adsorption process using two parallel arranged adsorbers comprises introducing a gas mixture to be decomposed via a process gas line, withdrawing a product stream via a product gas line, and withdrawing a residual gas stream via a residual gas line, preferably during a regeneration, rinsing and/or pressure equalizing step. During an interruption of the pressure swing adsorption process, the processing of the gas mixture to be decomposed, the production of the product stream and/or the production of the residual gas stream are not guaranteed and the scheme is re-adjusted so that a residual gas stream is continuously removed over a time period of a few seconds to several minutes. Preferred Features: The composition of the residual gas stream which is removed after re-adjusting the scheme, corresponds to the residual gas stream removed during normal operation. The time period over which the residual gas stream is removed is at least 1-5 minutes.
