New polymerizable monocyclic compounds (I) fulfill a need for compounds of low melting point for the preparation of oriented liquid crystal polymer films, which on mixing with a liquid crystal medium can be used as an active layer for switchable liquid crystal devices, and which have good solubility in the liquid crystal medium. The polymerizable compounds are of formula (I). P = a polymerizable group; Sp = a spacer group or a single bond; X = -O-, -S-, -OCH2-, -CH2O-, -C(=O)-, -C(=O)O-, -OC(=O)-, -OC(=O)O-, -C(=O)-NR0-, -NR0-C(=O)-, -SCH2-, -CH2S-, -CH=CH-C(=O)O-, -OC(=O)-CH=CH- or a single bond; R = H, F, Cl, Br, I, CN, SCN, SF5H, NO2, 1-20C (cyclo)alkyl optionally substituted by F, Cl, Br I or CN, where one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups can be replaced by -O-, -S-, -NH-, -NR0-, -SiR0R00-, -C(=O)-, -C(=O)O-, -OC(=O)-, -OC(=O)O-, -SC(=O)-, -C(=O)S-, -CH=CH- or -Ctriple bondC- so that the O- and/or S- atoms are not directly bonded to each other, or R = P-Sp-X-. R0 and R00 = H or 1-4C alkyl; L = F, Cl, Br, I, CN, NO2 or 1-7C alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl or alkylcarbonyloxy, where one or more H atoms can be substituted by F or Cl; and r = 0-4. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a liquid crystal (LC) mixture containing at least one compound (I); (2) an anisotropic polymer or anisotropic polymer film obtained from the LC mixture; (3) an LC display having at least one compound (I), mixture, polymer or polymer film in its active layer. |
