PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a matrix display driver through which a high quality display image that is made suitable to the characteristics of electron discharging elements and an input video source or the like without increasing the dynamic range of the driving. SOLUTION: In the driver where electron discharging elements 14 that are connected to horizontal lines 12 to which scanning selection voltages Vy are applied from a scanning voltage driver 18, are applied with a driving image voltage Vx through vertical lines 13 from an image voltage driver 16, an average image level detecting circuit 19 is provided to detect an average image level of the image signals to be displayed and the level of the voltages Vy being outputted from the driver 18 are varied based on the detection result.
