An environmentally friendly process for treating plant matter and foodstuffs, during all stages of storage and handling, to prevent premature flowering, germination, sprouting and rooting, losses in quality and blackheart formation quantity comprises treating the plant matter and foodstuffs with hydrogen peroxide and one or more of i) trace concentrations of dispersed metal or metal ions, ii) hydrogen peroxide activators, synergists and promoters; iii) hydrogen peroxide stabilizers and modifiers; iv) pH regulators and v) organic or inorganic additives.
