PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the time required for attaching and detaching a workpiece to and from a spindle chuck. SOLUTION: Immediately after the completion of machining a workpiece, with the machined workpiece sucked from the rear, the spindle chuck 2 is opened to pass the workpiece through a discharge pipe 21 in the spindle 1 and discharge the same. Simultaneously, a workpiece supply head 12 holding a nonmachining workpiece 3 is approached from the front of the spindle chuck 2 to insert the workpiece 3 in the opened spindle chuck 2. The workpiece 3 is positioned in the longitudinal direction by the position control of the workpiece supply head 12, and after the spindle chuck 2 chucks the workpiece 3, the head 12 releases the workpiece 3.
