PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in traveling durability and weather resistance and prevented from cupping. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 1 has a magnetic layer 3, a functional layer 4 essentially comprising carbon and a lubricant layer 5 in this order on one face of a nonmagnetic support body 2 and has a cupping preventing layer 6 and a back coat layer 7 in this order on the other face of the support body 2. The cupping preventing layer 6 essentially comprises carbon to compensate the cupping effect of the functional layer 4 essentially comprising carbon which generates a convex state of the medium to the magnetic layer 3 side.
