PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide efficient utilization of space and secure cam travel of a low output cam in a direct striking type variable valve system. SOLUTION: The variable valve system has a camshaft 1, the low output cam 2, a pair of high output cams 3, an outer lifter 5 having a void 5b, an inner lifter 6 slidably housed in a void 5b interior, and a lock mechanism connecting both lifters or releasing a connection of both lifters. A shape of the void 5b in a crown face 5a of the outer lifter 5 and an outline shape of a crown face 6b of the inner lifter 6 are formed in elliptic shapes longer in a sliding direction of the cams than an axial direction of the camshaft.
