PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an unnecessary operation of a reverse inhibit mechanism and to prevent a shift lever from being blocked to be shifted into the 'R' position when the shift lever is operated quickly, in using switch means having a noncontact area. SOLUTION: This gate shift device is provided with a first switch means 10, a second switch means 11, a reverse inhibit mechanism 13, and a control means 15. The first switch means 10 has noncontact intervals between each range position. The second switch means 11 is turned on when a shift lever is operated in the lateral direction and maintains the on-state until the shift lever is returned to the D range position. The control means 15 controls the first switch means 10 to detect the other positions than the forwarding range and makes the reverse inhibit mechanism 13 free. The control means 15 controls the first switch means 10 to detect the D range position or makes the reverse inhibit mechanism 13 locked when the second switch means 11 is in the on-state.
