The power system, comprising an i.c. engine (1) with a gas intake (2) and exhaust (3), and a pressurised gas accumulator (4) connected to a control unit (5), has the accumulator intake (6) connected to the engine's exhaust. The engine exhaust is fitted with a two-way valve (7) with one side connected to the accumulator and another to the main exhaust system; the valve is operated by the control unit (5). The outlet from the accumulator is connected to the engine gas intake via a second valve (14) operated by the control unit, and an optional pressure reducer or turbocompressor.
