A secondary battery having a high energy density and a high capacity and being excellent in charge−discharge cycle stability and safety is provided, which comprises as essential constituents a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and an electrolyte, the active material of at least one of the positive and negative electrodes containing at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the radical compounds represented by the general formulae (1),(3) and so on:(1)[wherein X1 and X2 are each independently a group represented by the general formula (3), alkoxy, halogeno, hydroxyl, or cyano; and R1 to R8 are each independently hydrogen or alkyl](3)[wherein R10 is alkyl or substituted or unsubstituted phenyl].
