PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which reading precision of an original image is improved. SOLUTION: When receiving the transmission light from a color original image with a CCD area sensor, an OFD is firstly driven (P1) to discharge all the electric charges remaining in a photodiode part. Then the transmission light is received from the color original image, resulting in a light-receivable state in which electric charges are accumulated in the photodiode part (T2). In the light-receivable state, accumulation of electric charges in the photodiode part starts. When a prescribed charge-accumulation time passes (T3), TG is released in the CCD area sensor so that the accumulated charges in photodiode parts are sequentially transferred to a vertical transfer path. Further, when the transfer of the accumulated charges starts (T3), a light source (LED) is turned off (T4). Thus, during transfer of electric charges, only the charges accumulated in the photodiode part during the charge transfer period are transferred to the vertical transfer path.
