PURPOSE: A digital video recorder is provided to compress and record video information using only one MPEG IC to reduce recording capacity and produce high picture-quality images. CONSTITUTION: A digital video recorder includes an analog/digital converter(10) for converting analog signals inputted from multiple cameras into digital video information, a video switch(20) for receiving the digital video information to sequentially output the video information, and a still image compression unit(30) for compressing each image output from the video switch. The recorder further includes a temporary recording unit(61) for storing the still image, a motion picture compression unit(50) for receiving the video information stored in the temporary recording unit for a predetermined period of time, and a main recording unit(62) for recording the video information compressed by the motion picture compression unit in a compressed data form. The digital video recorder also has a motion picture restoration unit(70) for restoring compressed video information corresponding to a reproduction channel of the main recording unit, a still image restoration unit(80) for storing the video information of the motion picture restoration unit, and a digital/analog converter(90) for outputting the video information restored by the still image restoration unit to a monitor.
