The measuring device has a housing (10) containing several orientation sensors. At least one of the sensors is a gyroscope. At least three position engineered grooves (100-206) are provided in at least one outer surface of the housing to receive at least two precision engineered adapter bodies (300,310) which can be mounted in the grooves. The adapter bodies are preferably tubular or cylindrical and releasably fastened in the grooves.
