VIBRATORY GYROSCOPE

The present invention relates to vibratory gyroscopes and particularly, but not exclusively, to surface acoustic wave gyroscopes having a cylindrical form. A gyroscope (100) is provided comprising a vibratory element (110); means (130, 132) for inducing a mode of vibration into said vibratory element (110); and processing means for generating, in response to a change in strain detected in said vibratory element (110), a signal indicative of a rate of ratation about an axis of said vibratory element wherein said rotation is that imparted to said vibratory element (110) subsequent to an inducing of said vibration. The vibration inducing means (130, 132) comprises an acoustic signal source provided at a location spaced from said vibratory element (110). Undesirable effects associated with mounting vibration inducing means to the vibratory element (110) are thereby avoided.
