[Also in Division D1] In a washing and/or drying machine having a centrifugal emptying pump 24 connected to the washing container 10 by a pipe 23, a combined filling and venting pipe 33 extending upwardly to atmosphere is connected to the pipe 23 close to the pump inlet, so as to prevent foam in the pipe 23 from rendering the pump 24 ineffective. The invention is applied to a washing and spin-drying machine, as described in Specification 877,429, having an inclined perforated basket 11 provided with an impeller 12. Hot and cold water are supplied through inlet tubes 34, 35 controlled by solenoidoperated valves 37, 38. The tubes 34, 35 merge tangentially with the pipe 33, so that the water flows down the pipe 33 with a spiral motion thereby reducing the formation of bubbles in the pipe. An inclined vent pipe 41 leads into the pipe 33 above the normal liquid level in the machine, an arcuate baffle 43 (Fig. 7) preventing overflow of water flowing down the pipe 33. A pipe 53 (Fig. 4) vents the container 10 when the loading opening 16 is closed. Any liquid split into a gasket 20 drains into the pipe 23 through a small bore pipe 54. A level-responsive switch system controls filing, emptying and the commencement of spin drying. It comprises a chamber 60 connected to the container 10 by a tube 61 and to a pair of pneumatically-operated electric switches 71 by pipes 69, 70. The chamber 60 is divided into two connected compartments by a partial partition 66. As the container 10 is filled and emptied liquid rises and falls respectively in a venting pipe 68 and the changes in pneumatic pressure in the compartment 63 are used to operate the switches 71.
