PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical writing device constituted so that the deviation of the joints of two optical systems is inexpensively reduced including not only positional correction in a subscanning direction but also positional correction in a main scanning direction. SOLUTION: In this optical writing device, a plurality of light beams independently modulated according to an image signal are used and joined on the scanned surface of an image carrier so as to perform optical writing. The device has synchronization detection means 11-1A and 11-2A for detecting the write start positions of the respective light beams, a beam lighting means for lighting an optional dot between the synchronization detection means and the image write start position, and beam position detection means 11-1B and 11-2B for detecting the position of the lit dot. Since the write start position in the main scanning direction of the light beam is corrected in accordance with the detected position of the light beam, the joints of two beams are excellently aligned in the main scanning direction.
