Preferably before the sensor is not ready for operation, especially immediately after the engine is started, ion current signals are registered. From these, the mixture composition is determined, in terms of lambda value. Preferred Features: When the gas sensor is ready for operation, it is used to measure the lambda value, which is associated with the characteristic value determined from the ion current signal. The relationship between values determined from ion current and those measured conventionally by the lambda sensor in its normal mode, is stored in a control unit, e.g. as one or more characteristic curves. This relationship is measured and stored continuously during engine operation. Following detection of a tank filling operation, the system is reset and the relationship is deleted. It is then re-determined and stored as before. The need for tank filling is determined through tank leakage diagnosis and/or by use of a tank filling gauge.
