Oil treatment processes and an oil treatment facility (10) for improving the properties of heavy crude oil with respect to production, transportation, refining, and product market value. The basic process comprises injecting heavy crude oil with a liquid that is volatile and/or miscible with the oil, the liquide preferably being hydrocarbon condensate. The injected liquid reduces the viscosity and density of the heavy oil. When injected into oil at or near the lower end of the well (12), the hydrostatic head is reduced, and hydraulic losses associated with lifting the oil to the wellhead (14) are also reduced. When injected into a stream of heavy oil prior to oil/water separation (30, 50), the settling velocity of droplets of oil or water is increased.
