PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for evaluating a carbon film whereby a Raman spectrum of the carbon film can be selectively detected without effects of a base, and a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium including the same. SOLUTION: There are provided the method for evaluating the carbon film which has a process of bringing a metal in touch with onto the carbon film, a process of measuring a surface enhanced Raman spectrum of the carbon film, and a process of evaluating a film quality of the carbon film on the basis of a ratio ID/IG between an intensity IG of a band G(graphite) having a peak at approximately 1550-1650 cm<-1> of the surface enhanced Raman spectrum and an intensity ID of a band D(disorder) having a peak at approximately 1350-1450 cm<-1> , and the method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium including a process of making sure that the ID/IG is in a range of 0.1-0.5.
