PURPOSE: Provided is a method for controlling artificial respiratory system applying extended sigh used for treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome and artificial respiratory system equipped with a program for performing the method. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of setting an initial value of a tidal volume and positive end expiratory pressure; expanding the lung while the positive end expiratory pressure is increased to a pressure limit and the tidal volume is reduced stepwise; and contracting the lung while the positive end expiratory pressure is reduced and the tidal volume is increased. The method is useful for treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome acute pulmonary damage and atelectasis. The step to expand the lung is continued for 2 to 300 seconds. In this step, the positive end expiratory pressure is increased by an increment of 1 to 30 cm H2O and the pressure limit is 20 to 100 cm H2O.
