The regulation system allows the engine (10) to be operated with a weak fuel mixture or a rich fuel mixture using respective regulation characteristics for each operating mode. The setting and regulation of the engine load is effected by controlling the quantity of fuel injected via the fuel injection device (25) in the weak fuel mixture operating mode and by controlling the quantity of combustion air supplied to the engine in the rich fuel mixture operating mode.
